Racism, a short story Essays
Racism, a short story Essays Racism, a short story Essay Racism, a short story Essay Racism, a short storywhich will forever haunt me on my ill-fated childhood. I try to pay no heed to the physical beating but more to the emotional distress I was unjustly forced upon. The colour of my skin alienated me from my students; as a result of this I had no friends, no one to look up to or even to care for. It was the time when I needed it the most, the foundation of my upbringing which would steer me on the righteous road to adulthood. My first and only school report read: A hard worker. Malkir is a determined student with a passion to succeed. He has built up an encouraging reputation and we are glad to accept him as a new member of our school community. Something so simple made me feel so good. My dad smiled, looked at me and said he was proud. It sounds silly but I had butterflies in the pit of my stomach. I hadnt felt this good since I won the spelling test in primary school. My parents always said that I was special and everyone would value me for who I am, like Allah does, but evidently life doesnt happen that way. Who is this God I worship? I devote my life, praying to my faith, all for this! Last Thursday it got to the point of no return. When I came home with a scratch from my forehead to my lower neck my parents said, I dont want you to let anyone hurt you anymore.Stupid, stupid religion. Where is God when I need him the most? I had been in the toilets for about fifteen minutes now trying to get Jamies voice out of my head, but to no avail. The words echoed and imprisoned my autonomy. Oh Ill get you boy you can be sure of that, Ill get you. On the brink of collapsing, I whispered Allahu Akbar. I could now feel my parents circulating me, as if their strength were my silhouette, a nebulous barrier without substance. As I felt this sense of security, I cautiously strolled to the lunch hall. I wasnt even hungry; I just used it as a way to extricate my thoughts from reality. As the bell rang for the beginning of the fourth per iod I ran through the Lonsdale corridor in hope I could evade the year elevens who refer to me as the the terrorist or Bin Laden. Some would see this as a false hope as I will have to go all the way around the gym where they will be smoking their cigarettes. I covered my eyes with the whole of my palm, please G..ggod.-He has asked me why but to be honest, I dont really know myself; its just a sort of ego boost. He has done nothing to merit what the lads and I do to him, well apart from him being black, and to be honest that is suffice to beat him up. He is one of the few black kids in the school thankfully. Cos hes in our year we can just get away with saying it was a fight and not racism. Notihng would happen anyway, everyone hates black people. I dont really believe in karma, well, if it were true, Im sure I would be a cripple by now. There was one time where I truly believe we all overstepped the mark. He was swiftly jogging past the gym, for once it looked like he had a purpose, but it was most likely just to avoid us. We were all drinking, it was a Thursday and it was Adrians turn to get the vodka. I felt slightly dizzy but I was probably able to come to my senses for next lesson. Jay on the other hand was completely wrecked. He walked, or should I say stumbled over to the black kid only to find him breaking down in tears holding his new phone out saying just take it, I cant handle this anymore. I thought this was slightly exaggerating; we would have probably pushed him about, thats all. The whole group laughed, apart from me. I felt some form of remorse; it was though I could feel my ego sadistically thrashing against my stomach lining. It was like butterflies but the sensation wasnt a reassuring one, trust me.His rigid body lay there innocently as a constant reminder of what just happened. Although the attack wasnt anything more severe than the others, we just all seemed to know something was wrong. In this cataclysm our senses seemed to enhance. It was then an awkward silence, to say the least, broke out and everyone could vividly feel the gentle breeze of the wind brush their cheek. The colossal surroundings were as still as a flower but enclosed us on the scene. Not a single word passed, we all stood there impassive and in denial about the travesty that emerged out of nowhere. It took about four minutes for the punctual ambulance to arrive. The fusion of chaotic sirens and blue lights added to the pandemonium. It was then we all knew, even a professional couldnt hold back that poignant face of despondency. Putting it in terms we can relate with, the doctors compared the likes of Mals death to that of Anne Franks. People without the will to live seem to fade away at the most optimistic of times He just gave up on life. Immediately the thought of my dead brother erupted into my head and was so indomitable I wasnt able to think about anything else. A shadow of shame engulfed me internally. Im not a murderer, I didnt do it my conscie nce whispered but screamed at the same time I broke down, please G..ggod.Malkir Sudah, may Allah bless over you and rain down his love from the kingdom of paradise. Although you were wrongly taken from this world, we hope its to a better place. You were of paramount importance to this family Mal, and there is an eerie silence in your absence. We will continue to obey and follow in the footsteps of the virtuous prophet Muhammed, peace be upon him. Gods love was flourished into every being of mankind, including that of the boys who stole your life. Allahu Akbar.

Changed for the Better
I watched my mom hobble down the driveway like a drunken zombie, nervously grasping onto my dadââ¬â¢s arms as he assisted her into the car to take her to the hospital. Her legs just simply stopped working. I wondered, ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s wrong with mommy? Will she come home again?â⬠The last two times my mom went to the hospital, she came home with a new baby brother. But this time, she would have to stay at the hospital for six days to get her treatment. That week felt like a year. I just wanted my mommy home. Watching someone who had been so strong for me, now look so weak was confusing. In 2001, my mom was shockingly diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, MS. After four years of back and forths to the local hospital for week at a time, my mom found a treatment that helps her be the best she can be. A once a month trip to the hospital for a few hours, eliminated most of the pains and gets her back on her feet. Literally. All those years of heartache taught my mom that the little stuff isnââ¬â¢t important. She became a happier person because she was conquering this disease and better yet helping people conquer that disease. My mom was honored the role of being the MS ambassador for New Jersey in 2012, giving her opportunity to shoot a commercial for the Multiple Sclerosis walk, do a radio commercial, and travel around the East Coast giving speeches to other MS patients about her triumphs. She goes into these speeches in high heels, showing women they can get better with time and treatment. Her message is that everyoneââ¬â¢s path is going to be different with Multiple Sclerosis, so you need to find a doctor that fits you. People with MS gather to hear her story to try to find a way to help them. ââ¬Å"Your speech has given me hope that one day I will be better.â⬠My mom has become an inspiration to many victims of this disease. She has also inspired me to get involved with the organization and go be a counselor for a camp for children whose parents have MS. My mom could have sat and said why me and let the disease take over her life. But she didnââ¬â¢t. I look up to her and admire her every second of everyday because she taught me to be brave and fight for what I want. My family went through this disease together and I believe we were changed for the better because of it. Many would think my mom getting a disease would shatter our family. It did for a while but it also changed us for the better. Living with a disease taught my mom to enjoy the little things because what matters is that sheââ¬â¢s healthy. My momââ¬â¢s disease inspired me to never let something negative takeover my life. It has been eleven years since her diagnosis and she has adopted a role to educate and inspire others to fight and never give up.

Report on the Religious Life of Planet Earth Assignment - 1
Report on the Religious Life of Planet Earth - Assignment Example Or, generally speaking, is planet earth a religious planet? The physical universe displays evidence of a mathematical precision and order. This order is based on universal laws that govern the physical phenomena in the whole universe designed by an intelligent supreme authority, the Creator of all things. He ideally designed every part of these thousands of systems that cooperate with each other to keep His living creatures alive. For countless millions of years, the gravitational force of the sun has held all the planets in stable orbits. However, considering the possibility of manââ¬â¢s ruining or destroying the Earth by his own folly, the universal order that governs the whole universe might as well be disturbed thereby affecting our lives from other planets. Sadly, the current Earthââ¬â¢s rising temperature may pose alarming threats to this universal order as it already damaged the Earthââ¬â¢s ozone layer, which causes climate change. Concurrent climate change has resulted in destructive extreme weather which includes droughts, heavy precipitation, heat waves and hurricanes worldwide. An article reports that ââ¬Å"it is very possible that we could see more instances of ozone depletion in the coming year as greenhouse gases emissions continue, causing increased tropospheric heat and more stratospheric coolingâ⬠(Daniel & Byrd, 2011). According to human report, such catastrophes have taken place through excessive deforestation, uncontrolled pollution of the atmosphere and spoiling of the waterways. In fact, research of the University of East Anglia declares that ââ¬Å"Chinaââ¬â¢s groundwater irrigation system is responsible for polluting the atmosphere with more than 30 million tons of CO2 per yearâ⬠(Saini, n.d.), making China the largest greenhouse gas emitter in the world. This is evidently one example of how human is ruining the Earthââ¬â¢s environment and ecosystem. But the big question is why do humans

America in the 1920s Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
America in the 1920s - Essay Example Realities of the wartime, accompanied by the scale restrictions of democracy and introduction to violence of tens millions of people, have rendered huge influence on public psychology, morals, valuable priorities. At the same time, the war has also lay the foundation of rather significant industrial growth in the majority of the states of the West that cannot but affect a standard of living of the population. To the full all this was showed in the history of the United States of America. The war and post-war economic boom became the reason of essential social changes in the country, which have turned into partial reconsideration of former, in many respects Puritan, value system. So let us consider 1920s American economic and social developments, including the economic boom (1922-1929), impact of the automobile, introduction of new electrical products and household appliances, improvement of the standard of living and working conditions, and growth of the stock market. Growth of the population and the well-being of the population in the beginning of the twenties century have led to a long growth in economy. In 1920s was carried out railway construction, people spent a lot of money for purchase of the new capital 'consumer blessings', and as a result building sector, automobile and other industries experienced an extraordinary rise. It is possible to say that the most important factor of the amazing economic boom (1922-1929) in the USA is the occurrence of new industries. In particular, phenomenal rise was observed in automotive industry. There has arisen the huge demand for production of allied industries, especially steel, rubber, glass and oil products. In the road building, which has received additional stimulus of development, there were also many new workplaces. In the same period in high gear developed manufacture of radio, other electrical products and household appliances. Installment trading became the powerful factor of growth of interna l consumption. Despite of the existence of variety of laws, called to limit the creation of large corporations, monopolization of economic life occurred very quickly, especially in sphere of public service. As it usually happens during the periods of boom, in the second half 1920s there was a big growth of share prices. And there was a ground for it: manufacture grew, incomes of the population raised, unemployment decreased. "Americans invested in companies by buying shares. They bought shares 'on the margin', paying back loans when share prices went up1". When this speculative boom has reached its limit, it has begun great fall of stocks. Since this moment all financial system of the USA and together with it the financial system of other world has started crackling. It is assumed that the main reason of the Great depression is the stock market crash in 1929. However the process actually has been set by the irresponsible profit making of brokers during the economic boom, which has begun in 1924. During this period the country is unprecedented prospered, however then there was a dangerous skew in incomes. Calvin Coolidge, the president of the USA in 1924-1929, has declared the non-interference of the state in business. The tax on income has been sharply lowered. Illusion of economic growth has led to occurrence of a financial pyramid: the share price were artificially overestimated, Americans counted up dividends and bought new shares,

Performance management and rewards Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Performance management and rewards - Essay Example extremely essential to retain the human resources of the organization so as to enhance its productivity and brand value in the market among other rival players. This essay is divided into four phrases mainly highlighting the importance of retention as well as the ways to increase the rate of retention of the employees in the organization. Along with this, the retention strategy is also devised in order to reduce the ratio of attrition of the Hertfordshire-based SME so as to amplify its reputation and efficiency in the market among others. It is the process by which, employees are retained within the organization for longer period of time so as to enhance its image and productivity. Due to which, retention is recognised as the most important tactic of talent management process. So, it is offered higher attention by the organizational entrepreneurs in this competitive age (Cannon & McGee, 2011). Retention of an employee within an organization is essential as it acts as its driving force. This is because it helps in introduction of varied types of inventive products and services thereby satisfying the changing requirements of the customers. As a result of which, it enhances the reliability and trust of the customers towards the brand thereby amplifying its position and dominance in the market among others (Finnegan, 2010, pp. 556-561). Not only this, employee retention also gears the goodwill of the organization to a significant extent thereby amplifying its cost of profit margin and net income. In addition, employee re tention also helps in regaining the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization, long term success and profitability and improvement of turnovers. Thus it might be stated that retention of employees might enhance customer satisfaction, improve total sales cost and amplify returns of the Hertfordshire-based SME. The term retention seems easy, but itââ¬â¢s extremely hard. This is mainly due to various reasons presented. Lack of appreciation is one of

Snow White And The Huntsman Film Studies Essay
Snow White And The Huntsman Film Studies Essay In the epic action-adventure starts out with (Kristen Stewart) who plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen, her name, snow white. While the film offers an appropriately exciting take on the fairy tale that inspired it, Snow White and the Huntsman is slow at the beginning of the movie with a confused script that jumps around a bit. Thirty minutes into the film it starts to pick up with its first action war scene against the Dark Army, an assaulting force of glass fighters. The film offers wonderful digital effects during this scheme with the soldiers shattering when struck by swords. Ravenna (the evil queen) seizes control of the entire kingdom, locks snow white up and years pass. More drama begins to unfold as age starts to affect the Queen. In order to sustain and preserve her beauty, the Queen must draw out the essence of youth from young women. The Queen also consults with a digitally animated Magic Mirror, that very interesting to watch. As the story begins to pick up, the Mirrors informes the Queen that Snow White is predestined to destroy her unless she devours the young girls heart. At this point the huntsman is introduced; his name is Eric, a widower who has lived in the Dark Forest, is taken to Queen. She orders him to lead her brother, Finn to search for Snow White. In exchange, she assures him that she can revive his deceased wife, Sarah. The next few action scenes have high intensity with a lot of digital affects within the scary forest full of nightmares to an enormous, drooling, angry goblin thats out to eat anyone that enters his valley. The visual effects continue as they travel through the fairy sanctuary where the fairies and animals alike dwell in harmony. The guides for Snow white and the huntsman are hefty, stocky dwarves who were snow whites loyal friends. The actors who played these dwarfs caught me off guard while watching the film. It seems the movie producer passed over little people for the roles of the seven dwarfs. à Full-sized British actors such asà Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins and Ray Winstone played the roles and were shrunk using digital manipulation and had their faces digitally transmuted onto small the bodies. This took away from the realization of the seven dwarfs if you recognize any of the actors playing the seven dwarfs. I would like to have seen more of the seven dwarfs and I feel they w ere slightly under used. The location of the movie took place in the beautiful United Kingdom. Some of the beach scenes were filmed near the village of Marloes which gives the movie a darker feel. The classic Snow White fairytale was set in Germany and the movie showed these German features throughout the movie. The shape of the castle, the design of the village cottages, and the dark forest which represented Germanys Black Forest brought the classic story to life. The music that was created for the movie was outstanding. It really lifted the film and stood out over the chaos of the battle scenes. The background voice that was used created tension in all the right places, and moved me to the point that I wanted to cry during the dwarfs duet.à The costumes made for the Queen were spectacular. The dresses represented power and elegance with a touch of armor for battle as the story unfolded. I would have no problem seeing it again even though I know the ending. All in all this movie was money well spent. I would whole heartedly recommend this film. It has really given the kiss of life to the fairy tale classic, breathing new air into a new way of storytelling. The acting was well done except for Kristen Stewart playing snow-white. I would have no problem seeing watching this movie again or buying it on DVD.

The Path to the Chromosome Theory of Heredity :: History Science Biology Essays
The Path to the Chromosome Theory of Heredity The notion of the chromosome theory of heredity is very important to the understanding of evolution and genetics. There were many ideas, some correct and others not, which influenced the revolutionary discovery of chromosomal heredity. The main stones in the path to the chromosomal theory are the pangenesis hypothesis, the germ-plasm theory, and Mendelââ¬â¢s Laws. Pangenesis Lamarck expressed the idea that by simply using or not using certain organs they may be developed or atrophied and their offspring can then inherit these acquired characteristics. (Milner p. 375, 1993) It should be noted that this theory was not widely accepted largely due to the fact that the French word that Lamarck used in the sense of ââ¬Å"mustâ⬠was translated as ââ¬Å"wants to,â⬠which makes it sound as though the organism decides to change its body. Furthermore, Lamarck provided no mechanism by which this could take place. (www.ridgenet.net/do_while/sage/v1i8f.htm) Darwin was the one to give a mechanism for Lamarckââ¬â¢s idea. This mechanism is known as pangenesis. Darwinââ¬â¢s ideas of evolution were well founded in the beginning; however, as his theory progressed he reverted to Lamarckian thought to explain his observations. To begin his theory he started with the observations that there is variation in offspring. He wrote, ââ¬Å"no one supposes that all the individuals of the same species inhabiting the same confined locality, are cast of the same moldâ⬠¦I am convinced that the most experienced naturalist would be surprised at the number of the cases of variabilityâ⬠¦as I have collectedâ⬠(Chapter 2 of Origin of Species). He sees that there is a struggle for existence saying, ââ¬Å"as more individuals are produced than can possibly survive, there must in every case be a struggle for existenceâ⬠(Chapter 3 of Origin of Species). Finally, Darwin recognized that there is a survival of the fittest in that the organisms with the best variations for the continuance of the species live and those with variations that are n ot as useful to the continuation of the species die (Chapter 4 of Origin of Species). Darwin begins to diverge into Lamarckian thought at this point. Darwin wrote that, ââ¬Å" slightly different changes in the conditions of life add to the vigor and fertility of all organic beingsâ⬠¦the crossing of forms which have been exposed to slightly different conditions of life or which have varied, favours the size, vigor, and fertility of their offspringâ⬠(Chapter 9 of Origin of Species).
